U.S. and Japanese Warships Move Against Chinese Red Army

U.S. and Japanese warships are being sent to China to stem the victorious advance of the Chinese Red Army in the vicinity of Yenping, Fukien province. The U.S. State Department has asked the U.S. Navy to order ships there immediately. Three Japanese warships have been ordered to Foochow.

On 9 October 1933, the 24th Division of the Red Army attempted to capture Siaoshi Township, but the town remained firmly in Nationalist hands.

Xi'an Incident

The Xi'an Incident was a Chinese political crisis that lasted from 12 to 26 December 1936. Soldiers of the Northeastern Army under the command of General Zhang Xueliang arrested Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Nationalist government of China, while the latter was in Xi'an to review the troops. Zhang demanded that Chiang agree to a ceasefire in the Chinese Civil War so that the Nationalist government could ally with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against Japanese expansionism.
