In Old Mexico President Madero Betrayed and Deposed and Huerta Declared President.

BY the act of his friend and ally President Madero, down in Mexico has been betrayed as the result of a coup d'etat pulled off by General Victoriana Huerta, which landed President Madero and his cabinet in prison. Huerta has been proclaimed President as a reward for his treachery, which forces us to the conclusion that down in old Mexico a successful traitor is the highest type of citizen or statesman—for a while. During ten days of fighting in the City of Mexico, it is estimated that 1900 persons were killed, many of whom were noncombatants, and that from 5000 to 10000 were wounded. But for the trouble and expense, we are quite inclined to wish that the United States would go down and annex Mexico and proceed to give them one good, long dose of genuine, kinglike rule, which could only be done by force of arms and without mercy. In their disposition to anarchy and misrule, the dog Latin races are becoming a disgrace in the world—to God and to peace-loving men.
