German General Assassinated at Nantes, France
# Nichy, France, Oct.—COUP Gen. Holtz, commanding the important German base at Nantes on the occupied French coast, was shot dead at a.m. today by two assassins in the most serious terrorist incident of the entire occupation period. In the last such incident, the assassination of a German captain at Paris, 11 French hostages were shot in reprisal. The killers escaped. It was understood that Holtz's assassins escaped despite an immediate roundup by German army patrols of scores of persons who were on the docks and streets despite the 1880 p.m. curfew. Holtz was alone. Two attackers stole up on him in the total coastal blackout and fired six shots at him as he reached the darkened square opposite the Place St. Pierre near Nantes Cathedral. Two shots which entered the neck at the back were fatal. The assassination was blamed on new outbreak of Communist terrorist activity after a lapse of about three weeks. Nantes is one of the most important German army bases in the coastal area.

The execution was retribution in the form of collective punishment for Resistance activity in the area, including the capture and subsequent execution of Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe — a direct echo of the reprisal logic unleashed at Nantes three years earlier.
