Israel says it will keep control over part of southern Lebanon after war with Hezbollah ends

Katz had already announced the intention to create a buffer zone in the south of Lebanon earlier in the month. He had also already said displaced residents would not be allowed back until northern Israel was safe and that houses would be demolished. But his latest statement goes a step further than his last, as he said Israeli troops would stay in the region after Israel's war with Hezbollah ends.

Soldiers to Remain

Goldfield, Jan. 1. Upon orders from Washington all of the troops now in Goldfield will remain indefinitely. Instructions were sent to Col. Reynolds, who is in charge of the soldiers here, to keep his men in the strike district until further orders. The men will be quartered at the Merchants Hotel. Everything is quiet and from present appearances the soldiers will have little to do.

On 6 October, the day after Bulgaria declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire, Emperor Franz Joseph announced to the people of this Ottoman territory (that had been occupied by Austria for 30 years) his determination to recognize and grant them an autonomous and constitutional regime, under his authority as their annexing sovereign. Bulgarian independence and the Bosnian annexation were not covered by the Treaty of Berlin and set off a flurry of diplomatic protests and discussions.

Consequences — Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, the provincial capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, formally annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908. Grave implications of the assassination were immediately recognized, as in this 29 June article with subtitles 'War Sequel?' and 'War May Result'. In August 1914, The Independent described the assassination as a 'deplorable but relatively insignificant' reason for which the financial system of the world is in chaos, that international commerce is suspended, that industries are everywhere demoralized and families ruined.
