British, French Warships Massed as Mystery Subs Attack 3 Spanish Tankers; French Steamer Is Captured by Spanish Rebel Cruiser

SAINT JEAN DE LUZ, Franco Spanish Frontier, July 30. (UP) Attacks on three Spanish tankers by a mysterious submarine and the capture of a French steamer by an insurgent cruiser brought a swift massing of British and French warships off Spain's coast last night. Twelve French and British warships took up positions a few hundred yards outside Spanish territorial waters, alert for any further attacks on freighters flying their flags and running the rebel blockades of Santander and Gijon. The mysterious submarine attacked the three Spanish loyalist freighters off the French fishing port of Grau du Roi, setting fire to one and driving the other two into French territorial waters. The tankers Valetta and Famora, which fled from the submarine attack, reported that they were en route to Marseilles when the submarine came to the surface, firing from a deck gun. The mayor of Grau du Roi, who is a fisherman, mobilized other fishermen and went to the rescue of the burning tanker. The French coastal steamer Riri was captured by the rebel auxiliary cruiser Canarias and taken to the Balearic island port of Palma, Majorca, where the crew was imprisoned. It also was reported that the French steamer Jacques Schlaffino, arriving at Sete from Bougie, Algeria, was attacked 40 miles off Minorca in the Balearics by a rebel warplane which twice swept the ship's decks with machine-gun bullets.

The conference was convened in part because Italy had been carrying out unrestricted submarine warfare, although the final conference agreement did not accuse Italy directly; instead, the attacks were referred to as 'piracy' by an unidentified body.

On the morning of 12 March 1938, the 8th Army of the German Wehrmacht crossed the border into Austria. The troops were greeted by cheering Austrians with Nazi salutes, Nazi flags, and flowers. The 'invasion' without shots fired was therefore dubbed the Blumenkrieg ('Flower War').

Easter Accords

The Italian government undertook to withdraw its forces from Spain to facilitate the restoration of peace in that country — a direct response to the crisis of covert Italian naval operations that had destabilised the Mediterranean.
