GRAND VIZIER SHOT DOWN. The Turkish Minister of War Is Killed by Assassins.

At Constantinople Mahmoud Shefket Pasha, the Turkish grand vizier and minister of war, was shot and killed by assassins Wednesday. His aide de camp, Ibrahim Bey, was also killed. The following official account of the assassination has been issued: "On leaving the ministry of war this morning the grand vizier entered a motor car with the intention of proceeding to the sublime Porte. But the car was obliged to stop while going through Bayezid and Divan Yolu square because the road was torn up. Some persons in another car, whose identity has been established, fired ten shots at the car. The grand vizier, who was severely wounded, was taken back to the ministry of war, where he died half an hour later. Lieut. Ibrahim Bey, who was accompanying Mahmoud Shefket Pasha, also was hit by some of the bullets and subsequently died" A man named Topai Tewfik has been arrested. He had in his possession two revolvers and cartridges. The motor car used by the assassins was found and the owner arrested. He has already made certain admissions.

The Said Halim Pasha cabinet was headed by Grand Vizier Said Halim Pasha. It was formed on 17 June 1913 after Mahmud Shevket Pasha's assassination. While Said Halim negotiated a secret alliance with the German Empire, Enver and Talaat engineered the Ottoman Empire's entry into World War I.

Siege of Adrianople (1913)

The Ottoman army under the command of Enver Pasha entered Adrianople on 22 July 1913. The Ottoman Empire won its last victory in the Balkans and did not lose a great deal of territory in Thrace until the First World War. The re-inclusion of Edirne in the Ottoman lands became official only with the Treaty of Constantinople (1913) signed with the Kingdom of Bulgaria on September 29, 1913.

The Three Pashas, also known as the Young Turk triumvirate or CUP triumvirate, were the dominant political and military figures who effectively ruled the Ottoman Empire after the 1913 Ottoman coup d'état and the subsequent assassination of Mahmud Shevket Pasha. It consisted of Mehmed Talaat Pasha, the Grand Vizier and Minister of the Interior; Ismail Enver Pasha, the Minister of War; and Ahmed Djemal Pasha, the Minister of the Navy and governor-general of Syria.
