Great Retreat (Russia)

On the 5th of September (23 August OS) the Tsar assumed command of the military, dismissing Grand Duke Nikolai and Nikolai Yanushkevich. On that same day the new leadership of the Headquarters issued a directive to end the Great Retreat. Russia was clearly not going to accept a separate peace, and the complete destruction of the Russian Army was beyond reach.

Rovno offensive

The Rovno offensive did not lead to the achievement of the goal set by the Austro-Hungarian Army High Command. The Dual Monarchy managed to capture Lutsk and part of Volhynia and Polesia, but the Russian troops turned the tide of the operation, inflicted a strong counterattack on the Austro-Hungarians and heavy losses.
