Influenza entered Australia for the first time in January 1919 after a strict maritime quarantine had shielded the country through 1918. It assumed epidemic proportions first in Melbourne, peaking in mid-February. New South Wales experienced its first wave of infection between mid-March and late May, while a second, more severe wave occurred in Victoria between April and June.

1919 England to Australia flight

In early 1919, the Commonwealth Government of Australia offered a prize of £A10,000 for the first flight from Great Britain to Australia in a British aircraft. The winners were South Australian brothers Ross and Keith Smith, accompanied by mechanics James Bennett and Wally Shiers, who completed the journey of 14,350 kilometres from London to Adelaide in a modified Vickers Vimy bomber. Of the six entries that started the race, four crashed en route, two of whose crews were killed.
