American Ship Is Sunk: Loss of Oil Tanker Texan Follows U-Boat Activity in the Gulf
Washington.—Warships were rushing to the rescue of possible survivors of the American oil tanker Texan, reported to have sunk at sea following collision with another vessel. Official report of the accident was received at the Navy Department, following a day of unconfirmed rumors. The Texan and the vessel it collided with are reported to have been under convoy. Attempts were made in some quarters to establish connection between the rumored sinking of the Texan and the report that a German submarine had been sighted in the Gulf of Mexico. The Navy Department has received no confirmation of the latter report, however, and is disposed to scout it. No information was forthcoming as to the location of the Texan at the time of the accident, nor were any other details available beyond the bare statement of fact given above. The name of the vessel with which the tanker collided is withheld. While it is assumed that the conveying warships picked up all survivors, other vessels were sent to the rescue, it was learned.
