Colombia earthquake rescue efforts enter 'final phase' as death toll rises

Rescuers in Colombia faced a race against time Wednesday as they searched collapsed buildings for survivors after the country's strongest earthquake this century. The magnitude 7.4 quake has killed 265 people and injured more than 3,500, with nearly 500 still missing.

Earthquake Rescue Work

PARIS, Aug. 31 (UP).—Governor General Bordes of Algeria has sailed from Marseilles for Algiers to direct rescue work among victims of last week's earthquake and tornado. Fifteen bodies have been recovered from the debris and the ruins of a movie theatre and several warehouses which collapsed were being searched for other victims. Doctors treated 230 injured.
