Chang Kai-shek Puts Bounty on Communist Leaders

Shanghai, Aug. 30.—General Kai Shek, head of the nationalist government, unable to stem the advance of the Red Armies, has offered 100,000 silver dollars for the capture of the Chinese Communist leaders Mao Tsetung and Chu Teh, and 50,000 for their heads. Blood money rewards, ranging from 500 to 10,000 silver dollars, have been offered for the lives of other Communist leaders.

Long March

The Long March was a military retreat by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Chinese Red Army from advancing Kuomintang (KMT) National Revolutionary Army during the Chinese Civil War, occurring between October 1934 and October 1935. About 100,000 troops retreated from the Jiangxi Soviet and other bases to a new headquarters in Yan'an, Shaanxi, travelling approximately 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles). About 8,000 troops ultimately survived the Long March.

Zunyi Conference

In January 1935, after the Red Army took over the city of Zunyi, a town of military importance in Guizhou, Southwest China, an enlarged meeting of the politburo of the CCP was held. This meeting involved a power struggle between the leadership of Bo Gu and Otto Braun and the opposition led by Mao Zedong. The result was that Mao left the meeting in position to take over military command and become the leader of the Communist Party.
