Four Men Perish at Sea: Three Members of Crew of Liner President Lose Lives Attempting to Rescue Man

San Francisco, Nov. 29.—Four men drowned at sea from the Pacific coast liner President. The President was en route from Seattle to San Francisco and was 50 miles off Coos Bay, Ore., when one of the men was washed overboard. Three members of the crew who went to his rescue were drowned when the small boat in which they put out was swamped.

The first version of SOLAS Treaty was passed in 1914 in response to the sinking of RMS Titanic, which prescribed numbers of lifeboats and other emergency equipment along with safety procedures, including continuous radio watches. Further versions were adopted in 1929 and 1948.

RMS Empress of Ireland sank near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in Canada following a collision in thick fog with the Norwegian collier Storstad in the early hours of 29 May 1914. she foundered only 14 minutes after collision. Of the 1,477 people on board, 1,012 died, making it the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history.
