THREE ARE MISSING AS SHIP CAPSIZES - Trio Believed Drowned and Twenty Thought Rescued as Towboat Turns Turtle

The Associated Press. ALIQUIPPA, Pa., August 30.—Three persons are missing and are believed drowned, while 20 others, members of the crew of the towboat Aliquippa of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, are thought to have been rescued when the towboat turned over in the Ohio River early today. The accident occurred directly opposite the Aliquippa plant of the steel corporation as the towboat was maneuvering to pick up tow of 10 barges to be transported to Memphis, Tenn., today. A double crew was on the towboat when, without warning, she turned keel upward. Quick work on the part of a ferryboat crew nearby the scene of the accident prevented large loss of life, officials said. The ferry crew tossed life preservers to those struggling in the water, and all but three are thought to have reached shore. The missing are: Christina Denlock, a chambermaid; William Atkins, a deckhand, and an unidentified deckhand. Company officials were at a loss to account for the upsetting of the boat. The Aliquippa was known as the fastest towboat on the river. The Aliquippa was in charge of Capt. Norman Buck Jones, who, on reaching shore, told officials he believed a pipe had burst forward in the towboat and had allowed water to enter, causing the boat to list and then upset.
