Death toll from Colombian military plane crash rises to 69 as search ends

Death Count Rises to 10 in Chinese Plane Crash
SHANGHAI, Jan. 22.—The death count in a Chinese transport plane crash at Mukden Tuesday rose from 2 to 10 today as another body was found in the wreckage and two passengers died in a hospital from injuries, the Chinese National Aviation Corp. (CNAC) reported. CNAC said none of the crew was killed. The pilot was listed as C. F. Wiss, an American.

Liaoshen campaign

The Huaihai campaign was one of the military conflicts in the late stage of the Chinese Civil War between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The campaign started when the People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched a major offensive against the Kuomintang headquarters in Xuzhou on 6 November 1948, and ended on 10 January 1949 when the PLA reached the north of the Yangtze. The heavy losses suffered by Whampoa-trained troops under the direct command of Chiang significantly weakened the position of Chiang in the Nationalist government.
