Ten Killed in Shelling of Madrid

Madrid, Dec. 12—(AP)—Ten persons were killed today and at least a score wounded as insurgent batteries threw round after round of shrapnel into the center of the Spanish capital. The government ordered out its militia reserves to stem double-edged insurgent thrust at the capital's defenses. While Fascist battalions struck from the northeast and the west, a Socialist communique listed important victories far to the north in Asturias province, on the Bay of Biscay. A new offensive, the government said, captured several towns. Fascists suffered heavy losses, the communique declared.

Battle of Jarama

By winter of 1936–37 the Nationalist forces, led by General Francisco Franco, having failed to carry Madrid by storm in November 1936, resolved to cut off the city by crossing the Jarama to the south east and severing Madrid's communications with the pro tempore Republican capital of Valencia. General Emilio Mola was in overall command of the Nationalist forces around Madrid and planned an offensive across the Jarama 11 km (6.8 mi) south of the capital.

Bombing of Guernica

On 26 April 1937, the Basque town of Guernica was aerially bombed during the Spanish Civil War. It was carried out at the behest of Francisco Franco's rebel Nationalist faction by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria, under the code name Operation Rügen. The attack galvanised world opinion against Franco and the Nationalists, and inspired Pablo Picasso's monumental painting.

The final offensive of the Spanish Civil War took place between 26 March and 1 April 1939, towards the end of the Spanish Civil War. Negrín fled to France but the communist troops around Madrid rose against the junta, starting a civil war within the civil war. Casado defeated them and started peace negotiations with Franco.
