CALCUTTA, India, June 9. Five thousand men, women and children were reported today to have been drowned in a cyclonic storm that struck a large number of villages in the Barisal district of India. First news of the disaster, which occurred May 18, reached Calcutta today. Immediate steps to restore destroyed communications with the stricken area were taken, and relief expedition started on its way. The delta of the Ganges River, where the Barisal area is located, was suddenly inundated by the gigantic tempest that caused one of the worst catastrophes in India's modern history.
