Germany's Merz proposes Ukraine as EU 'associate member' without voting rights

Dublin, Jan. 4 (by the A.P.) — On the reassembling of the Dáil Éireann today the new version of Eamonn de Valera's amendment was distributed to the members. It proposes a treaty of amity and association between Ireland and the governments of Great Britain and of the other states of the British Commonwealth. Today fifty-nine of the members of the Dáil—nearly half—had expressed their views on the Irish peace treaty. Between private and public sitting the Dáil thus far has devoted nine days to debate. Although the list of speakers is still far from exhausted, it is apparent that every argument has been brought forward and it is believed that henceforth the speeches will be short. Hope for a division tomorrow or Friday at the latest was freely expressed today. The newspapers continue to speculate on the size of the majority for the treaty. Anglo-Irish Treaty Dáil vote
The Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed in London on 6 December 1921 and Dáil Éireann voted to approve the treaty on 7 January 1922, following a debate through late December 1921 and into January 1922. The vote was 64 in favour, 57 against, with the Ceann Comhairle and 3 others not voting. The Sinn Féin party split into opposing sides in the aftermath of the Treaty vote, which led to the Irish Civil War from June 1922 to May 1923.
