Nazi Gen. Von Prittwitz Is Killed in Libya
BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. NEW YORK, June 1.—The German radio announced today that Gen. Wom Prittwitz und Gaffron of the Africa Corps was killed April 10 while leading his men in a sortie against the British garrison at Tobruk, Libya. The Germans did not amplify and it could not be learned immediately whether he was identified with Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm von Prittwitz-Gaffron, former German Ambassador to the United States.

Operation Battleaxe (15–17 June 1941) was a British Army offensive during the Second World War to raise the Siege of Tobruk and re-capture eastern Cyrenaica from German and Italian forces. It was the first time during the war that a significant German force fought on the defensive. The British lost over half of their tanks on the first day and only one of three attacks succeeded.
